Dr M: 80% of poll respondents oppose PPSMI abolishment

KUALA LUMPUR: About 80 per cent of 26,000 poll respondents of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed’s blog does not support the teaching of Science and Mathematics in Bahasa Malaysia. The former prime minister said he conducted the poll to gauge the people's sentiment on the abolishment the Teaching of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI), reverting it to Bahasa Malaysia and vernacular languages in phases starting 2012.

Parents unhappy over decision to revert

KUALA LUMPUR: Many parents and students are very disappointed at the Cabinet’s decision to reverse the Teaching of Science and Mathematics policy.

Said mother of three Kam Swee Har: “Language is not just about teaching grammar and writing essays; it is the whole application of the language.

“The exposure is different when you’re learning technical subjects like Science or Maths.”

Engineer and father of four, Sulaiman Mahran, agreed: “Technical terms need to be absorbed in English, so strengthening English in general is not going to help in Maths and Science.”

The Cabinet has made the decision of switching English for Mathematics and Science subjects back to Bahasa Melayu during the year of 2012. This is probably one of the most disappointing news ever brought upon the development of Malaysia. Instead of reaching the status of First World Country, we move 10 gigantic steps backwards.

This decision is not supported by a majority of the teenagers, who are the victims facing this outrageous challenge in the near future, nor is this supported by many of the parents who have to eventually watch their children forcefully adapt themselves to this huge change.

I, who will be known as The Voice, started this blog in high hopes that people will voice out their opinions, and BE HEARD! Email your opinions, comments, or suggestions to this address, the.voice.of.malaysians@gmail.com, and I will post up every one of them, as the voice of Malaysia.
